A Smarter Way Ahead

Just how big an influence will online sales have on the high street throughout this year? It’s fair to assume that the upward momentum is set to continue as more traditional retail names fight for survival.
Clearly the influence of technology is the biggest driver in these modern shopping trends. Several think tanks say smartphones have had the biggest impact - predicting they will eventually replace laptops as they become increasingly more powerful in terms of the technology inside and their wider overall appeal.
Christmas was a make-or-break period for many stores with record breaking online sales at the expense of over the counter transactions - indicating how the balance of power is beginning to shift. Website visits peaked at 107 million on Christmas Day, up 86% on last year whilst bargain hunters triggered a 45% rise on Boxing Day. Handheld devices were used increasingly throughout the holiday period, an increase of 1,000% compared to last year, according to the latest industry research.
Clearly these trends have a major impact on the whole comms industry as everyone becomes more reliant on the devices in their pockets. BYOD is one obvious example of the link between consumers and the corporate world.
There’s likely to be even more dependence on smartphones this year – fuelled by 4G - to satisfy an insatiable appetite for communication on the go, anywhere, any place, anytime. Buying habits and customer expectations have changed forever, whether at home or work. Comms technology will continue to lead the way, blurring the boundaries between virtual and real-life shopping experiences.
Think smart and stay ahead of the game.
