Watch This Space

Have you thought about buying a smartwatch? They’re being touted as one of the next big things in the ever-evolving mobile world.
With major players like Sony and Samsung launching products and Apple set to join the party, there’s certainly growing momentum. The potential is definitely there but I’m not convinced about where they sit in the market or how they could ever replace your mobile phone.
It’s certainly an interesting concept but I just don’t see the point as without a decent sized screen, they are going to have limited functionality. Interestingly mobile phones were shrinking in size but now they are getting bigger again with the optimal size around 5 inches. How could you possibly surf the web on a tiny watch sized screen? And then there’s the issue of limited battery life.
Thirty years ago a James Bond-style watch with a wire for strangling villains was every schoolboy’s dream. It was clearly fantasy however but to be fair the Casio calculator watch did attract a cult following.
With technology moving on so quickly, nothing seems out of the question. If demand does take off it could be huge. Who knows, Smartwatches may one day spread into the corporate arena having an impact on BYOD for example. But I’m not holding my breath. Younger generations may embrace them as a music player and messaging alert device but I just don’t see smartwatches being taken too seriously. Clearly manufacturers will be hoping otherwise as they try and create lucrative new revenue potential.
I suppose for now all we can do is watch this space. Time will tell.
